Making Vegan Easy Week 13 Round-Up

Tip #85: Vegan substitutes made easy.

Check out these books for ideas. I promise you don’t need to use any animal products to make great tasting food.

  2. The Complete Guide to Vegan Food Substitutions: Veganize It! Foolproof Methods for Transforming Any Dish into a Delicious New Vegan Favorite by Celine Steen and Joni Marie Newman

Tip #86: Use your words wisely.

You can eat meat, eggs and dairy but as a vegan, you choose NOT to. My word choices may seem picky, but when you say you can’t, unconsciously it feels restrictive. When you say you can but choose not to, you feel empowered. As a vegan, you will often hear from others, “Oh, you can’t eat that.” There’s no need to argue semantics with others but I will remind myself that I could eat it but choose not to and why. It helps.

Tip #87: Experiment with non-dairy milk substitutes.

Soy milk is an old vegan standby and I love it, but a lot of non-dairy milks on the market are giving soy milk a run for its money. There is almond, rice, hemp, flax, coconut and oat. The nutritional content is different for each one. Soy is high in protein. Almond is low-calorie. Check the labels and experiment to find your favorites. My new favorite is unsweetened, vanilla almond milk. It’s great in oatmeal and granola. What’s your favorite?

Tip #88: Shift the way you think.

You aren’t giving up cheese. Instead, you are giving up supporting animal cruelty. Even if you are kind to every animal you come in contact with, the dollars you spend on meat, dairy and eggs directly supports animal cruelty.

Tip #89: Worship the sun.

Make sure you get your vitamin D. Important for everyone—no matter what your diet. I get my level tested every year and take a daily supplement to make sure I’m getting enough, because winters in Chicago make it tough.

Tip #90: Be good to yourself.

Reward yourself for the changes you have made this year. It takes courage and discipline to change. Yay vegans!

Tip #91: Eat your beans.

Don’t be afraid of musical fruit. They are an excellent source of protein and fiber. If you are afraid beans will give you too much gas, read Dr. Gregor’s article about “clearing the air.” I bet it will make you giggle, and then check out this funny article for more laughs.
