Making Vegan Easy Week 34 Round-Up

Every day in 2012 I am posting one tip on my Facebook page to make living vegan easier. It’s going to take an army of vegans to move the world in a more compassionate direction. Join us today!

Tip #232: Even if you are very resistant to a veg diet, it can still lower your cholesterol if you stick with it. Funny how the body ignores the mind’s resistance.

Tip #233: Try a new recipe this week. Pick one that is simple and healthy. Keeping a repository of easy, go-to recipes makes being a healthy vegan easier. If you choose a recipe online, share the link on my wall. I made this salad over the weekend. It’s a winner!

Tip #234: Learning a new skill helps keep the brain healthy, especially as we age. I’m learning Spanish and found a few Spanish language vegan blogs. Trying recipes written in Spanish will be a fun way to practice. What are you learning right now?

Tip #235: People paste famous and inspirational quotes on Facebook left and right, but do they really spur change? Like my friend, Robin, wrote on Facebook one day “be unique, be yourself” and I totally agree. So today, I claim my own quote:

I AM the change I wish to see in the world. Are you?

What is YOUR quote?

Tip #236: I was reminded this morning that when you choose to live vegan, you become a minority. You will be considered “different” from the norm. In the beginning, this may feel uncomfortable. Over time, these feelings will subside. You may even come to love being vegan as much as I do!

Tip #237: Here are some great tips for building a community. (Tips from Gaiam.TV’s Facebook page.)

Tip #238: Being vegan is about more than food. Don’t forget to consider what you wear! You can find great vegan options for clothes, shoes and accessories these days. Ask stores to carry vegan options if you don’t see any while shopping.

Hey friends, have you shared these tips with your family and friends yet? If not, do it today. Join me on Facebook to read these tips daily and to learn more about what’s going on in the vegan world.

A Day in the Life of a Vegan: Meet Mickey

I met Mickey when I started volunteering with HEART in Chicago. I really love what this group does, so here’s a quick shout out. HEART’s mission is to foster compassion and respect for all living beings and the  environment by educating youth and teachers in Humane Education.

Humane education is a field of education that focuses on teaching young people how to use critical thinking and problem solving skills to address problems that are faced by people, animals and the environment.

For more information on HEART, read the About page. HEART is based in New York City with chapters in Chicago and coming soon to Portland. If you would like to volunteer or donate to HEART, click here.

Mickey (on right) with a HEART student.

Name: Mickey Kudia

Age: 25

Where do you live? Chicago

How long have you been vegan? 5 years

Wake up: My alarm went off at 7am, but I hit the snooze and slept for another 15 minutes.

Breakfast: I had a fruit smoothie (a little bit of kale, frozen fruit, a banana, and rice milk), muesli with almond milk and coffee.

Morning activities/work: While I was drinking my coffee, I read for half an hour. Right now, I’m reading Nonprofit Kit for Dummies, but usually I’m reading something for grad school. Then I went to the HEART office a couple blocks away from my apartment. There, I answered emails and prepared for meetings. I met with Leona, another HEART humane education instructor, about a new lesson we’re developing about gender inequality in the developing world. For anyone interested in the topic check out the GirlEffect.org.

Quick and Easy Breakfast

Oatmeal is a breakfast staple in my home. I usually cook two cups of rolled oats at a time which yields five large servings. I store the leftovers in individual glass containers that we can reheat and eat quickly the next day. This makes breakfast really simple and healthy. I typically eat it with fresh, chopped fruit. It tastes good and keeps me full until lunch time. If you want to start your day on a healthy note, give it a try!

A Simple Oatmeal Breakfast

1 small peach or nectarine, chopped

1 cup rolled oats, cooked

1/3 cup unsweetened, vanilla-flavored almond milk

Chopped pecans, optional

Making Vegan Easy Week 33 Round-Up

Every day in 2012 I am posting one tip on my Facebook page to make living vegan easier. It’s going to take an army of vegans to move the world in a more compassionate direction. Join us today!

Tip #225: When you attend a veggie festival, be sure to where your favorite message shirt. Why didn’t I think of wearing one to Veggie Fest? Everyone else did. (By the way, did you know you can buy It’s Easy Being Vegan t-shirts now? Well, you can!)

Tip #226: Vegans need to have thick skin. This is really tough for many of us who are super sensitive. There will be people, many close to you, who will push your buttons. Some intentionally, some not. Be thoughtful in your response, if any. I have found it better to ignore them most of the time.

Tip #227: Often when the topic of meat/dairy/eggs/leather (you name it.) comes up between a non-vegan and a vegan, the non-vegan will apologize for “needing” to eat or use animals for some reason. Honestly, nothing annoys me more because they are apologizing out of guilt. But because I don’t want to make people feel bad and I hope that eventually they will move to a more compassionate diet on their own terms, I kindly let them know apologies aren’t necessary around me. Then I try to move the conversation in another direction. I really like to keep things positive. How do you handle these types of conversations?

Tip #228: There’s a new vegan magazine on newsstands called Vegan Health & Fitness. Have you seen it yet?

Tip #229: The animal rights movement has its very own “David vs. Goliath” situation. If you care about animals, read this. It’s long but worth your time.

Tip #230: Read this post from Vegucated about the importance of community. Remember my tip #2: Find Your Tribe? It’s important! I don’t know what I would do without my tribe and I certainly don’t want to find out. How have you met other vegans?

Tip #231: Today is the perfect day to go vegan. How can I help? Send “Ask a Vegan” questions to itseasybeingvegan@gmail.com.
