Making Vegan Easy Week 44 Round-Up

Every day in 2012 I’m posting one tip on my Facebook page to make living vegan easier. It’s going to take an army of vegans to move the world in a more compassionate direction. Join us today.

Tip #299: Respect, Refuse, reduce, reuse, Repair, Repurpose and then recycle. Throw away as a last resort.

Tip #300: The Virtual Vegan Potluck starts November 1.

Tip #301: Once you’ve gone vegan and you’re truly committed, you will be known as “the vegan.” Be willing and prepared to discuss veganism at any time…from whatever angle you come to it by—be it animal rights, health or the environment. Many people want to know more about this lifestyle. An informed vegan can do a world of good by just having an intelligent and friendly conversation about it.

Tip #302: Take only what you need.

Tip #303: Practice what you know.

Tip #304: Community is important. Say hi to your neighbors. Ask them for help and offer to help. It’s a great way to build a strong community.

Tip #305: Choose a black cat or dog the next time you adopt a pet. When I learned about “Black Dog Syndrome” I was dumbfounded. I have had numerous black pets over the years and each one was just as wonderful as my very first cat named Snowball.

Tip #306: November 1 is World Vegan Day and the start of World Vegan Month. How about introducing one person to the vegan lifestyle this month?

Tip #307: Get active on your birthday. In lieu of gifts or fanfare, ask your friends and family to donate to your favorite charity or ask them to go vegan for the day.

Tip #308: One of my favorite blogs went dark about two years ago, so I was excited to see it’s being updated again. Check out Veganyumyum for the great recipes and gorgeous food photos.

Hey friends, have you shared these tips with your family and friends yet? If not, do it today. Join me on Facebook to read these tips daily and to learn more about what’s going on in the vegan world.

Happy World Vegan Day! (November 1st)

World Vegan Day is the last of the veg/animal celebration days for awhile — at least as far as I know. We veg-heads sure like to celebrate! In honor of World Vegan Day, let’s talk about animal testing. This is, after all, the animal rights subject that got my attention in a PETA newsletter way back when I was 1985. To this day, I remember the pictures of monkeys in cages with electrodes taped to their head. Ughhhh. Makes my heart heavy.

There is no reason in these modern times why this needs to continue. (Note: For the purposes of this post, I am only writing about animal testing for cosmetic purposes.) It’s so easy to buy high, quality natural products now that are human-tested and free of any animal ingredients. The skin is the largest organ of the body and is very porous. It easily absorbs much of what is applied to it. Seems to me, natural, vegan products would be the healthiest option.

Which is very convenient because there are so many great vegan products available that are also quite affordable. To find out if the products you use are vegan, check out Caring Consumer or The National Anti-Vivisection Society.

There are also great household cleaning products available. Why would anyone want to clean with harsh, harmful chemicals? Natural cleaning products are safe alternatives that won’t harm you, your family, your pets, the environment, and all other animals.

Cruelty-free products are now available almost everywhere from large discount and department stores, natural food stores, health food stores, and even your local grocery or drugstore. I haven’t said it for awhile but it’s easy being vegan!

You can easily find great substitutes for all your non-vegan products. Once you replace them, how about sending your old products back to the company that made them. Ask them, oh so sweetly, to end this disgusting practice. Let them know that from now on you are choosing cruelty-free.

I think this is the easiest change you can make on your way to becoming vegan. If you aren’t buying cruelty-free, how about pledging to do so today.

World “GO VEGAN” Days (October 26-28)

World Go Vegan Days run October 26-28. I realize there are a lot of animal celebration days this month, and I think we should celebrate animals everyday. I feel compelled to challenge all of you non-vegan readers to go vegan for the next three days. Why not pretend you’re vegan for just three short little days. Who knows, you might just like how it feels!

They say that a vegan saves approximately 95-100 animals each year. That means you could save almost one animal in just three days…or possibly a whole chicken or three whole fish. Try eating tofu or seitan. How about giving up dairy this weekend? Give the mama cows a break. And, if you’re going shopping, buy only vegan clothes and accessories. It’s just three days. I know you can do it! Let me know how it goes.

For all you vegans out there (Did you think I forgot about you?! No way.), I challenge you to introduce veganism to someone, anyone, young or old. Take them to a vegan restaurant or cook them a tasty meal. Doesn’t matter what you do, just do something!

World Go Vegan Days are sponsored by: In Defense of Animals and others

Celebrating animals…

Over the next several weeks there are a few special days designated for animals. These are not your usual Hallmark holidays either. Check out the web sites for more information:

World Vegetarian Day is October 1.

World Animal Day is October 4.

World Vegan Day is November 1.

Why not do something special to celebrate animals on any or all of these dates? Here are a few idea. You could volunteer for a local animal welfare group, take an omnivore out for a veg dinner, or better yet make an omnivore a vegan dinner. Be creative and have fun! Just be sure to do something for all the creatures who inhabit our world.
